4 Beyond the Lights $6,200,284 $6,200,284       1
5 Gone Girl $4,561,432 $152,635,317       7

'Dumb and Dumber' is regarded as one of the greatest comedies of all time, and the sequel is finally here. Twenty years later, 'Dumb and Dumber To' was released and had itself a pretty good opening weekend. I had felt it lost some momentum leading up to it's premiere and I personally did not think the trailers were that great. However, it seems the love for the original still drove the audiences to the theaters. I did not expect it to win the box office, but I'm glad it did. As expected, Big Hero 6 and Interstellar have another solid weekend. While Gone Girl once again stays in the top five in it's 7th week. An R rated movie making this kind of money is very impressive, and not to mention the Oscar attention it will get as well.

TOP STORIES

1. Matt Damon to reprise role as Jason Bourne

This had been rumored for a while, but now it has officially been confirmed. After a somewhat critically disappointing fourth installment of the franchise, staring Jeremy Renner, Damon will return to hopefully rejuvenate this successful franchise. I feel this where Damon feels comfortable, and after a small drought, this is where he can be put back into the limelight.

2. Margot Robbie will portray Harley Quinn in 'Suicide Squad'

There have been rumors surrounding the cast of this movie, but only one confirmation so far, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Not a bad start for a pretty unknown property. That is what this movie will need, star power. This will be DC's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' in a way. The Suicide Squad isn't well known among the general movie going audience, so to gain interest, the cast announcements will be very important. Obviously Margot Robbie is a stunningly beautiful women, but I thought she did a great job in 'The Wolf of Wall Street' as well. You saw a little crazy in her in that film, and she will need that to portray the psychiatrist gone insane, Harley Quinn. For those who don't know, Harley Quinn was first introduced in Batman: The Animated series. She was a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum who became fascinated with a certain patient there, The Joker. After many sessions with the Clown Prince of crime, she had become obsessed with the Super villain. She decided to adopt her own alter ego, and help him with his mischievous endeavors. This film will follow the highly anticipated 'Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice' in the DC Cinematic Universe, which will hopefully gain momentum for the rest of the movies to come.

3. Christoph Waltz Rumored to play next Bond villain (Bond 24)

It is being reported that Oscar winner Christoph Waltz will play the next villain in the 24th installment of the James Bond franchise. I really hope this is true, because I think this would be great. He was amazing as the villain in 'Inglorious Bastards', and is amazing in pretty much everything he does. I am really enjoying where they are taking these Daniel Craig Bond films. They are a little more serious, darker and psychologically thrilling. I thought Javier Bardem did great in Skyfall, but I think Waltz can take it to an even higher level.

4. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart to star in 'Central Intelligence'

The plot of this movie could be be "two men sit down and build a birdhouse", and I would still see it. I love The Rock. I especially love him in his comedic roles, which it seems this movie is leaning towards. Also, Kevin Hart has not gotten old to me yet. That day might come, but his schtick still makes me laugh. The plot actually reads "The story begins with a class reunion approaching, as a former high school sports star turned accountant (Hart) is contacted by a classmate (Johnson) who was bullied and humiliated back in the day. The “loser” that the accountant remembers is now a CIA contract killer who ropes him into helping foil a plot to sell classified military secrets." I think these two will play well off of each other, and should be a good chemistry.

5. Rocky spin-off CREED readies to shoot

This seems to have the makings of a good movie. A Rocky spin-off revolving around Apollo Creed's Grandson, starring Michael B. Jordan. Sly Stallone, Rocky himself will also play a part in the movie. I don't know much about this film yet, but i'm glad things are about to start. It's a solid idea with a solid actor, not a bad start.

Weekend Box Office Results:

1 Big Hero 6   $56,215,889    $56,215,889      1
2 Interstellar    $49,661,813      $49,661,813         1
3 Gone Girl   $6,207,4180   $145,535,841      6

$43,325,255
     3
5 Fury   $5,628,450   $69,396,679      4

This was a big weekend at the box office thanks to two highly anticipated movies premiering, Interstellar and Big Hero 6. Big Hero 6 was projected to do well, but I don't think anyone saw it beating out Interstellar. Since it is an animated film and from the same studio as 'Frozen' and 'Wreck-it Ralph', it was undoubtably going to grab the kid (plus parents) demographic. Yet I think word of mouth really helped this movie, and it coincidently did the opposite for Interstellar. This movie had been on people's radars for a long time, but I think the luke warm reviews (plus almost a 3 hour run time) deterred some people from going out and seeing it. However, I believe this movie will have legs and stay in the top 5 for a while. Even though some reviews aren't great, this is a movie everyone is talking about and saying you need to see (which I agree). Gone Girl still going strong in it's 6th week, now totaling a impressive $145,535,841. This was a great weekend for film. Not only because the box office did well (top two films grossing $105,877,702), but the quality of films that are in the top 5 right now are very high. Not including Ouija, the other four films average a rating of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a good time to be a film fan.

1. Star Wars Episode VII has finished principal photography and has received a title

It's real... Star Wars Episode VII has finished filming and now will be in post-production until it's release next December. This is a big deal because it means everything is in the can and it gives us reassurance that this is actually happening. In other big Star Wars news, Episode VII finally got it's subtitle: 'The Force Awakens'. Even though this is a fairly ambiguous title, fan's everywhere will now be speculating what this tells us about the plot. I don't think it's anything to go crazy about, but I think it fits nicely within the other titles of the franchise and makes sense.

2. Toy Story 4 is coming

Last week Disney/Pixar announced that they are moving forward with a fourth installment to their beloved franchise, 'Toy Story'. The movie will be released June 16th, 2017 and will be directed John Lasseter (director of the first two movies). This is one of the best trilogies of all time, so I feel conflicted with this news. I thought Toy Story3 ended on such a good note, that I don't want to possibly mess with that. However, if there's one company you trust, it's Pixar. Their track record is unbelievable, and I have no doubt Toy Story 4 will be just as good as the first three.

3. Christian Bale drops out of Steve Jobs Biopic

Another big actor has left this film, and I am trying to figure out why. Reportedly, Leonardo DiCaprio was originally asked to play the famous CEO of Apple, but he backed out. Then Christian Bale accepted the job, and eventually backed out as well. The script is being written by Aaron Sorkin (Social Network, Moneyball) and the movie is being Directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours). That is some pretty good talent attached to this movie, so it's interesting to see these A-list actors dropping out. The movie should be interesting as it will only be take place in the moments before three big Apple product announcements. Michael Fassbender is now rumored to be in talks to lead the film.

4. Idris Elba spills the beans that he and Tom Hiddleston will make an appearance in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'

I think Idris Elba received a pretty angry phone call from Marvel right after he broke this news. I don't believe this will be anything more than a cameo, however Marvel likes to keep everything close to the chest. Reports are saying that their cameo will only serve to set up the next Thor movie, but that possibly means a post-credit scene. I really enjoy both of these characters (especially Loki), and as long as it's just a cameo, I'm glad we will see them in the next Avengers.

5. Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg will team up again in a new comedy 'Daddy's Home'

IMDB's description says "When a divorced guy's ex-wife re-marries someone way more uptight, he re-enters her life and wreaks havoc" I can only assume Wahlberg will be playing the character who wreaks havoc, while Ferrell is the uptight new husband. Sean Anders will direct which gives me pause because he is responsible for 'That's My Boy'. However he has directed a personal favorite 'Hot Tub Machine', so I will give him a clean slate. I think this plot sounds okay, but adding these two guys to the mix immediately gets me excited. I enjoyed 'The Other Guys', and if they have that same kind of chemistry, I think this could work.

In Other News...

Channing Tatum has been cast as Gambit in the X-Men franchise. Gambit will make an appearance in the next X-Men film 'X-Men: Apocalypse', as well as receive his own stand-alone film.

Fox pushes a Best Supporting Oscar nomination for Andy Serkis' portrayal of Caesar in the movie 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes'. If nominated, this would be the first time an actor has been nominated when using motion capture technology. Serkis is also famous for portraying Gollum in the 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' trilogies.

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" Teaser Trailer Review

Well after an initial leak, Marvel has official released the teaser trailer to "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (above). The highly anticipated sequel to the 2012 box office mega-hit "The Avengers". As a fan, I am happy that I am able to see the trailer a whole week before it's original release date. However, I do feel bad that Marvel has to change plans and rush their release because of a few hackers. REGARDLESS, it's here and below are my highlights, thoughts and insights regarding our first glimpse of "Avengers: Age of Ultron".

  • First of all, I thought it looked really good A great teaser trailer (I believe this is what was basically shown at San Diego Comic Con) - in anticipation of this movie, I have been keeping close tabs on basic plot points and details regarding this movie. I have liked everything I have heard so far, and this trailer is a good first step to confirming the awesomeness I expect to come in May.

  • Trailer has a dark and complex tone. This is what I was looking to see, and I hope it's something that carries throughout the film. (Obviously still having some of the Marvel humor we've come to love). In the broader sense however, I have a feeling this movie will drastically change the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This looks like a logical next step in the series, and a situation we want to see our heroes in. Their backs really against the walls, hope dwindling, and being truly horrified of what has taken place.

  • Ultron - Looks and sounds badass. Even though James Spader didn't change his voice very much, I still think it works. Spader has such a creepy, chilling voice that it makes you immediately nervous and on the edge of your seat to hear what he will say next. While he speaks of having no strings attached, and the Pinocchio music plays in the background...you get the sense that this is going to be like no other villain we have seen in the MCU. Now onto his look...we got a lot of different shots (stages) of Ultron. I believe that's because he will evolve, update, and build as the movie progress (as he gets stronger). If you don't know, and this isn't a spoiler, but Ultron will be created from Tony Stark's technology. That is why he has a resemblance to Iron Man, and an evil robot. We also got a quick glimpse of his army flying around...so that should be fun.

  • An Ultron army brings me to my next point, Tony Stark is feeling guilt. We can see in the trailer that Tony feels somewhat responsible for what is happening, and I think  he also feels guilt for partially helping create Ultron. In Iron Man 3, we can see that Tony is mentally shaken from what happened in the first "Avengers", and now this sequel may take him over the edge. Which could lead perfectly into the rumors surrounding Captain America 3 and future Marvel movies. *Warning: potential spoilers until the end of this paragraph: *There are reports that Iron Man will appear in Captain America 3 because those two will be against each other (Civil War), based on what happens in "Avengers: Age of Ultron". Long story short, The Government enacts a law that controls all super heros to work for them and reveal their identities. Obviously some won't be in favor of that, like Captain America, and I'm thinking Tony Stark may want to hand his stuff over and help the government because of what happens in "Avengers: Age Ultron"*

  • 'Hulkbuster' Iron Man Armor - This is our first live action look at Tony Stark's 'Hulkbuster' Armor, and I think it looks pretty awesome. It's looking like Hulk may go rouge, and Iron Man will be there to shut him down. I'm excited to see that fight happen, how it will end, and what capabilities that suit has. Many possibilities there...

  • Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch -We finally get to see Aaron Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen in their roles as Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. These characters were teased in the post-credit scene of Captain American 2, and described as "miracles" and "the twins". For those who don't know, Quicksilver has super speed and Scarlet Witch has somewhat magical abilities. I don't have much to comment on their appearance in the trailer, but I thought they looked fine, and not too corny (which is what I was a little worried about). Their outfits look very grounded in reality, which is good.

  • Finally, loved the Andy Serkis cameo. Who the hell is his character?

This teaser definitely got me excited for the movie, and left me wanted more- exactly the point of a teaser. Good job Marvel, keep it up.

'Godzilla' Review

Below is my review and grade for the movie ‘Godzilla’. I wrote this assuming you have seen the movie, or do not care about spoilers.

[SPOILER ALERT]

Let them fight!

What I liked about the film

Act 1/Bryan Cranston – Right out of the gates we are hit in the face with the most emotional scenes in the movie. The first third of the movie really captivated me and it created humanity in this world that was
relatable. Bryan Cranston’s performance tears at your emotions, and I immediately bought in. The scene where he has to close the door on his wife was heartbreaking. Even though I had seen that shot in the trailer, It still got to me. Also, when he is trying to get the real answers for what is happening, you are rooting for him as an audience member. His portrayal of this damaged, conflicted character completely sucks you in.Then I really enjoyed the end of the first act when everything is building up to the reveal of the first monster, it has thriller aspect to it.

Visuals – How they depicted Godzilla and the other monsters in the film was magnificent. It almost made me squirm in my seat whenever they showed a close up of the monsters. I definitely had a lot of “oh, shit” moments going on in my head. The visual effects were phenomenal, and they looked completely realistic.  The way they walked and fought through the different cities was great. I especially loved the scenes of Godzilla swimming with his “fins” out, or the impact of him coming out of the ocean. However, my favorite scene visually has to be when the paratroopers are sky diving down into the city right near Godzilla with their red flares streaking. That was one of the most beautiful shots I have ever seen in an action movie.

Directing – The director, Gareth Edwards, I thought did a great job in the film really making the audience apart of the story. The way he shot a lot of the scenes really made us see everything that was happen from the human perspective. Doing so, it creates even more fear and terror, as we seem just as hopeless as the humans running for their lives in the movie. Even though I feel this was a little over done, I like the scenes of the news broadcasting the fights on TV. It definitely was good break in the action, and added a little humor to the situation.  Going back to the scene of the paratroopers sky diving; when he put us inside of Aaron Taylor Johnson’s goggles, that was very cool. It gave you a better scale of Godzilla, and made you think how absolutely ridiculous and terrifying this must be.  There were a lot of key decisions made from behind the camera, and it definitely paid off.

Act 3 – The last 20 minutes of this movie is what made the film worth going to see. The ending fight scene is
by far the best part of the movie. The fight between Godzilla and the two other monsters was exactly what I wanted to see, I just wish there could have been more of that. I understand that they needed to build to that point, but I’m just being selfish and wishing we could’ve seen more of the monster’s fighting. Regardless, the visual effects were stunning and terrifyingly realistic. I wish I could go back and just watched this part of the movie again. Then obviously the best part of the fight was when Godzilla used his radiation fire breath against the monsters. Not only is that cool enough by itself, but when he opened one of the Muto’s mouths and breathed fire down his throat.… that was one of the most bad ass things I have ever seen. The movie did not fall short in this aspect of the movie and I am happy that they got at least this part of the film right.

What I didn’t like about the film

Act 2 – I probably could have taken a nap during this entire part of the movie, and I probably would’ve enjoyed it more. It hurts me to say that I was actually bored in the movie theatre when this part of the film was occurring. I just felt liked it dragged on and there wasn’t a lot of meaningful plot lines. For example, Aaron Taylor Johnson and that little boy he helped on the train…what was the point of that? I just felt the film lost its humanity after Bryan Cranston was killed. Cranston’s character was the person who brought the audience in and made us care about this world and these people. Then once that was taken away from us, we had no connection with Aaron Taylor Johnson’s character, and it just felt forced. Speaking of…

The Ford Brody character/Loss of the human element – This is nothing against Aaron Taylor Johnson, because I think he is a good actor. However in this movie, this character just fell short. I think it’s a
combination of poor writing and ATJ’s inability to display different emotions effectively. I felt like he had the same facial expression for the entire movie. As I said above, it felt like the movie forced us to relate to this character, and it didn’t work. We weren’t as emotionally invested into Ford, as we were to Bryan Cranston’s character. So I didn’t seem to care about him or his storyline. The connection between him and Elizabeth Olsen was fine, but I felt like there needed to be a stronger storyline involved. I just felt myself waiting for the end to happen and to see the monsters. A film like this should have the audience enthralled with the pressures and issues that the humans are dealing with, and then, oh yeah, there’s a freaking monster coming out of the water. That would’ve elevated the end of the movie even more if they had that platform to build off of.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie and I would recommend the average movie-goer to go see it. They definitely captured Godzilla perfectly, and the visual effects are phenomenal. I liked how they made Godzilla an anti-hero, and a ‘protector’ of earth. There are some magnificent scenes that were amazing to watch in the theatre and there were more surprises than I expected. The movie does drag on during the middle of the film, and it hurts the movie as a whole. Also, this is a film where the trailers were very well done and made you believe something different, which is disappointing. However, Bryan Cranston and the ending fight scene is what made this an enjoyable film.

Score: 7/10

'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Review

Below is my review of ‘The Amazing Spider Man 2’. Don’t worry if you have not seen the movie, there are no spoilers.

What I liked about the film
  • Visually great/Good action- This was the best aspect of the film. All of the action sequences are beautifully shot and the effects looked great. The way they visualized Spider-Man swinging around New York City and fighting, was something that the first Spiderman Trilogy never really gave us. I never read the comic books, but it looked like this movie was jumping straight out of a Spider-Man issue. I didn’t feel like it was corny, and it definitely could have been. Even the sequences with Electro, there were some great shots and stunning visual effects.  I caught myself saying in my head many times, “shit, that was pretty awesome” and it takes something pretty stunning to make me say that to myself.
  • Relationships – This was a big key to the movie and definitely one of the strongest parts of the film. This movie was very relationship driven, and as audience member, I really felt that their connections were real. Once again, this is something that could easily be seen as corny and forced (ex. Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway). However, each interaction made sense and made the story interesting. Whether it was Peter Parker and Gwen Stacey, Peter Parker and Harry Osborne, Harry Osborn and Electro, Peter Parker and Aunt Mae, Spider-Man and Electro… there were so many important relationships, yet each one of them worked. Which is huge tip of the cap to the actors…and on that point…
  • The acting- Now looking at the cast list, you could assume that this movie would be well acted. However, everything doesn’t always turn out that way. With what the actors were given, they really embodied their characters and drew you in. They really brought out the emotions of the audience in some scenes, a.k.a. good acting. Also, I really enjoyed the take on Peter Parker and Gwen Stacey that was created in the first film and continued into this one. Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker seems a lot more grounded in reality, and is way more relatable. On that same note, Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey is a well done female character who isn’t just clueless damsel in distress. She’s very intellectual and actually plays a legitimate role in the film. With that being said, the new additions to the franchise were great as well. Jamie Foxx was great as Electro (I could do without the voice) but he convinced me that a bumbling nerd could turn into this angry, misunderstood villain. [side note: I thought Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon was hilarious, some reviews did not feel the same way, but I thought it was funny] Then there’s Dane Dehaan, who kills it in this movie. Even though his character was a little misused (I get into that later) he really took the role on and did a good job.
  • Spider-Man- I feel like they nailed the character of Spider-Man in this movie. He’s very confident and loves being Spider-Man. From what I know about Spider-Man (mainly from that awesome 90’s morning cartoon show), he is cocky, funny, but actually does his job well. That’s what they portrayed in this movie, which really worked and it made the movie more enjoyable. He would be making fun of the villains, cracking jokes, goofing around, and still kicking people’s ass. I thought it was fun and helps separate Spider-Man from the crowded genre he’s in.
What I didn’t like about the film
  • Overcrowded- Once again a Spider-Man movie suffers from trying to pack too much into the script. Now this movie was nowhere near as poorly done as Sam Remy’s Spider-Man 3, but many things did seem similar. There were too many sub-plots in this movie, and it was just jumping around from issue to issue. It never gave the audience member sufficient time to really dive deep into the main plot of the story. There were definitely storylines in this movie that were not needed, and it seemed like this movie is was just a set-up movie for future films (Sinister Six), which is disappointing. They tried to fit in too much and it just came out too hectic and not very focused.
  • Tone- I am conflicted on this subject because I liked the tones they used in the movie, but they should’ve just picked one. The movie starts out with this ‘comic-book’ style movie, that’s very fun and entertaining, and I liked that. Yet throughout the movie, they intertwined that tone of the film with a lot of dark elements and realism. I like that take on a super hero as well, because it grounds it in reality and make its more relatable. However, they needed to pick one or the other! I wasn’t sure how I was supposed to feel about the film because it kept changing tones throughout the movie. It made the film very uneven and if they would’ve stayed with one style, it would’ve been a lot better I feel. A movie can have light tones and still have a sense of realism (ex. The Avengers), but this movie made the transitions very drastic, and made it pretty obvious.
  • Music- This is a little ‘nitpicky’, but it is worth mentioning. Music in a movie should not take you away from what’s happening on screen, and I feel like that’s what happened a few times during this movie. For those who have seen the movie, when peter is listening to Phillip Phillips in his room…terrible. However, don’t get this confused with the score of the film. The score was fine, and I actually like that Electro had his own music whenever he fought. Yet there were a few moments in the film that really turned me off because of the music that was chosen (almost like ‘The Great Gatsby’).
  • Misuse of Characters- Minor Spoiler Warning: I will try and not to ruin too much, but if you have seen any of the marketing for this movie, this won’t be that big of a surprise. Harry Osborn. There were definitely some plot stretches in this movie (little boy standing in the street at the end) but none worse than the use of Harry Osborn at the end. I loved what Dane Dehaan did with Harry throughout the film, and his relationship with peter was great. I even bought into the reason why he became angry and evil. However, everything did not need to be seen in this movie. All of a sudden he’s on the brink of death, and can immediately fly this hovercraft with no training at all? Once again I feel like they just pushed storylines that didn’t need to happen. The Green Goblin was not needed at the end of the film, and they just rushed the character. It seems the writers wanted us to just assume a lot of things during the movie, and that’s not good story telling. Most aspects of a film should be explained and have a purpose. I felt like the creators of this movie glossed over that detail in the film. Also, Rhino was just terrible.
Overall, I did enjoy watching ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’. I recommend seeing the movie, especially in the theatres. I was definitely entertained and it was a good super hero movie. However, it does not cross that line into a good movie outside of the genre. There is a lot of missing pieces and it some cases too many pieces, which definitely hurt the movie. This film had all of the elements to be an even better movie, but they tried to fit too much into the script, and it seemed to fall short on making an impact. All in all, it is a fun superhero movie with great visuals and good acting. The average movie go-er will enjoy it, or at least I did.

Score: 6/10
