Movie Review Recap (8/19)

I have not provided a movie review for some time now, so here is my quick recap of the biggest movies of the year so far. The most recent films entail a longer review as they are still in theaters. Let me know what you think!

Zootopia

This is a film that on surface could look like a bland children's movie, but actually provides strong themes and humor for adults. I enjoyed this movie throughout and the voice acting lends to some great chemistry between the characters. While it may not tug at your heart strings as some Pixar films, it's still a fun animated film that every age could enjoy.
screen.

Bamtan V Superman: Dawn of Justice

This movie had so much potential going for it and I still feel that way after seeing it. That's what makes this even more frustrating. There are some really great scenes there and visuals that made me geek out. However, this movie totally misses the mark and the direction is poorly executed as a whole. The story is all over the place and Zack Snyder continues to be style over substance. It's hard to recommend this movie to anyone, unless you're a die hard comicbook movie fan. Visually this movie was amazing to see in IMAX, but even the casual comicbook movie fan can be lost and confused throughout this film. If you haven't seen it by now, then you're probably not going to want to see it at all.

4/10

Everybody Wants Some!!!

I was very exciting going into this movie as 'Dazed and Confused' is one of my favorite movies of all time, and this is the spiritual sequel from the same director. While I wasn't disappointed with the movie, it didn't quite have the same feel as it's spiritual predecessor. On it's own though, it is a fun movie with a great soundtrack (obviously). Linklater does a great job of capturing the essence of college in this time period with fun characters and everyday buffoonery. Definitely one to catch when available on demand or Blu-ray.

6.5/10

Keanu

'Keanu' surprisingly keeps you entertained throughout the entire movie. The film does drag at some points and not all of the jokes land. However, there are a few laugh out loud moments and the interactions between Key and Peele are the best parts of the film. While this has nothing to do with their sketch comedy show, if you are fan of the duo, you will like this movie.

The Jungle Book

'The Jungle Book' is so much fun, and the spectacular visuals will blow your mind knowing it was all shot on green screen. Even if you missed this film in theaters, I still recommend it for any age. Jon Favreau was able to update this classic Disney story that everybody knows without boring the audience. The voice acting was great and they integrated the music in an organic way that didn't take you out of the movie. The main actor was phenomenal as well, being able to act off green screen and keep me captivated. Not to mention he was 14-15 years old when this movie shot. I would not be surprised if this became a new classic for kids growing up today.

8.5/10

Captain America: Civil War

'Captain America: Civil War' is the best Avengers movie so far. While it is a straight continuation from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the supporting characters raise this movie to a new level. Spiderman and Ant-Man almost steal the movie for me. The conflict between the two sides is actually believable and you are invested in what happens (*cough Batman V Superman *cough). Additionally, the Russo brothers are able to handle a lot of characters so well, and give each their own time to shine. It definitely doesn't feel overstuffed, and make syou feel like you are watching a comic book come to life. A few classic Marvel-isms exist that'll make you roll your eyes but there are three fighting sequences that are spectacular and outweigh any small problems. The airport fight at the end of the second act may be the best scene in any comic-book movie ever.

8.3/10

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stoppping

Maybe my expectations were high but I am a little disappointed with 'Popstar'. There are are legitimate laugh out loud moments in this movie though. If you're a fan of Andy Sandberg's humor, like me, you will like this movie but maybe not love it. The concept is great and the first half of the movie really delivers. I was hoping they would continue the 'Spinal Tap' type of tone they had set but the ending is bit lack luster and strays away from direction they started

6.5/10

Finding Dory

As a follow up to the beloved 'Finding Nemo', this movie didn't need to be better...but should just bring us back into this world and take us on a whole new adventure. For the most part, it did that successfully. While there are a few similar elements to it's predecessor, which I was afraid of, this movie stands on it's own and is another solid entry from Pixar. Once again Pixar proves it's ability to put out movies that can be thoroughly enjoyed at any age. The comedy is still there, along with the over arching themes that can hit home to both adults and kids. There are some call backs to first movie which is fun, but it doesn't hit you over the head with it. While this movie wouldn't be in my top ten Pixar movies of all time, in no way is it a bad movie. Dory is able to be fleshed out more in this movie and not be just a one-note character, which is fun to watch.

7.5/10

Suicide Squad

I wanted to go into this movie with no expectations, but probably went in the theatre with not a ton of hope to be honest. After it was all said and done, I came out conflicted but mostly disappointed. This movie’s main problem is similar to the biggest problem Batman V. Superman had, I believe. The story…which is kind of a big deal. There is no through line in this film, and is very confusing at times. They tried to pack too much into this movie, and you can definitely tell it was reshaped multiple times. The soundtrack and editing can be jarring at some points which makes it really hard to set the tone. This film had trouble defining an identity and came out sloppy. I haven’t even mentioned the ending and main villain which is absolutely awful, not much more to say. This harpanes back to my main point though, there was no set up and everything felt rush or unneeded. I will say though, I really did enjoy certain aspects of this movie. Most particularly the beginning and certain characters like Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Deadshot (Will Smith). I felt like Margot Robbie was the star of this movie and kept it from absolutely sinking. Also, the director, David Ayer, added some great visuals that made me geek out. Overall, the story is a mess but the characters are fun enough where you can enjoy this movie. It is definitely better than Batman V Superman. 5.5/10

p.s. Jared Leto’s Joker is not even in this movie enough for me to formulate an opinion. He was fine, and I appreciate the different take on the character. Don’t expect the Joker if you go see this movie though, as a lot of his scenes were cut.

5.5/10

Sausage Party

From the initial concept of this movie, I was in. Now I am happy to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this movie from start to finish. This type of comedy played right into my sense of humor, and it seems like I’m not alone (based on the box office results). While the movie can get a bit over-the-top sometimes, it never lost me as an audience member. It’s a dark animated comedy about a sausage trying to get laid, let’s not over think it folks. I think if you’re older than 35 years old, you may not have liked it as much but that may be the point. This movie was made for 18-30 year olds, and we are a ‘South Park’ generation where we have grown up on this type of humor. The idea was so original, but yet so simple at the same time. I’m honestly shocked nothing like this has been made before. A lot of the voice acting is incredible and makes it even funnier knowing the faces behind the characters, most notably James Franco, Michael Cera and Nick Kroll. On top of that, the story is well balanced and each scene serves a purpose.
